Amazon Subscription Service Not a Good Deal?

by Jason Bean on November 27th, 2007

amazon-subscription-service

I’ve been checking out some of the details about Amazon’s new subscription service for their shopping of household/grocery supplies.

I think the idea itself is brilliant and am actually interested in using it. The only problem though is the value isn’t there for the money for me. The first thing I checked on was laundry detergent, absolutely one of those items you’re going to keep buying until you’re dead.

The price breakdown on the Tide HE 64-load bottle is 4 bottles for $67.94. The problem with that is that it works out to just about $.27 per load. When I buy the detergent at the store, I’m usually paying about half that price per load. Even with the 15% discount they’re offering now for signing up for the subscription service, it’s still more money.

I clearly understand the value in this just showing up at my house on my scheduled delivery dates and me not having to worry about it, but I’m still going to the store for the other items I need. I’m not really saving a trip yet.

What about you? Are you interested in this type of service? Would you pay a premium price for the added convenience?

Let me know in the comments.

Yes, I am. For certain products they might not be economical, but I’ve done some looking at them for diapers, and it really doesn’t look like a bad deal at all. And with a first baby, having regular diaper drops takes a little stress off.
