Uncover The Internet

Find Something Local

by Wendy on January 17th, 2006

What a vague title, eh? Could I have been any more less specific? Well, actually, that has a LOT to do with what I’m going to write about and that’s local search, i.e., finding something on the Internet that’s actually near you.

There are a couple places that you can do this on the Web easily right now. Google Local has a pretty good service that includes lots of maps, plus, you can download Google Mobile to your phone (I’m going to try this). However, I much prefer Yahoo Local. Here’s a few reasons why:

  • It’s more user-friendly. Yahoo Local has most popular searches, a better initial format, and a community rating system. For instance, someone in my area REALLY likes Sunset Pizza.
  • It just looks better. I’m not really drawn to maps; they don’t make me want to start diving in and searching around for stuff, and Google Local presents maps front and center as the initial starting off point. Yahoo Local has a map, but there’s also a lot more clickable stuff around it that invite you to start poking around.

So there you have it - a highly scientific comparison of the two top local search services in the arena at the moment; AOL and MSN both are starting to emerge in this area of search but for now, Yahoo and Google are dominating. It’s kind of like that fight between Captain Kirk and the other guy, Old What’s His Name, where they fight with tridents and nets…
